On Saturday 7 January 2023, appointed a previous Ministry of Finance permanent secretary Emmanuel Mpawe Tutuba as the new cash governor for the central bank.
The appointment was preceded by the current Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan in Dar-es-Salaam.
According to the Directorate of Presidential Communications, President Hassan has appointed Emmanuel Tutuba as the new governor of the Bank of Tanzania, replacing Florens Luoga who has completed his tenure successfully.
It should be noted that Mr Tutuba supplants Prof Florens Luoga and hence becomes the eighth governor at the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) since 1966.
In regards to his life history, he finished his A-Levels in 1994 at Milambo Secondary School in Tabora Region having studied economics, geography and mathematics. From 1996–1999.
He later joined Mzumbe University where he attained his Advance Diploma in Economic Planning at the Institute of Development.
This was followed by a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) in Corporate Management and graduating from the same university in 2001.
In February 2020, President John Magufuli appointed him as the Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) for Mwanza Region.
On 4 April 2021, he was appointed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan as the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Planning. On 7 January 2023, he was appointed as the 8th Governor of Tanzania’s central bank.
The previous central governor Prof Luoga has been in the position for five years and therefore it was high time for a change.
However, it’s on record that the new BOT governor comes after an economy facing inflation caused by the general financial crisis plus high commodity prices.
According to research Inflationary issues were at 4.9 percent in November 2022. Before her appointment, Emmanuel has been working as a lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam and as chairperson of the Kilimanjaro Airport Development Company, which oversees the management of the Kilimanjaro International Airport.
It should be remembered that the governor of the Bank of Uganda, Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, died on January 23 at Nairobi Hospital, in the Kenyan capital.
The 72 long-serving governors of the bank of Uganda, died of complications from diabetes. As was admitted to Nairobi Hospital on December 31 2021.
In other words, we look forward to receiving a new governor in Uganda who will be appointed president Kaguta Museveni following Tanzania’s example.
